The Special Events Ad Hoc Committee will be a working committee that exists to suggest, evaluate and implement special events within the city that increases economic development, celebrates unity in diversity and promotes the City of Boynton Beach as a vibrant, livable destination community.

The committee shall be composed of five regular and two alternate members appointed by the City Commission for terms of two years. The committee members shall be members of the community who can contribute to the continued growth and excellence of the city’s special events and who can offer expertise and experience in the areas of public relations, communications, event planning, event organizing, marketing, accounting and fundraising. Meetings will be set on a regular basis after the committee is formed. These are public meetings and will be open to the public.

The City is looking for qualified individuals who are eager to serve on this committee. Interested persons can download an application from the city website at www.boyton-beach.org or pick up a hard copy in the Clerk’s Office in City Hall, located at 100 E. Boynton Beach Boulevard. All applications need to be returned to the Clerk’s Office by August 31, 2011.

When City staff has collected all applications, they will screen the applicants for selection by the Commission.

Youth Volunteer Bank Awards Presented

The City of Boynton Beach Education & Youth Advisory Board presented the annual Youth Volunteer Bank awards at the May 17 City Commission Meeting.

This year, 42 volunteers, in grades 1-12, recorded 1,600 hours serving their community.  Service included beach cleanups with the Sand Sifters; volunteering at hospitals, churches, schools and nursing homes; as well as other activities sponsored by the Boy and Girl Scouts and Student Councils. Each was presented with a certificate and $10 Target gift card.

The Youth Volunteer Bank was created in 1997 to promote youth volunteerism.  The goal is to facilitate, promote and reward youth that volunteer in our community. This ongoing program is a cooperative effort between The City of Boynton Beach, local businesses and individuals, volunteer organizations and youth volunteers. 

Since the beginning of the program, 659 youth have recorded over 54,500 volunteer hours and $21,850 in savings bonds and prizes has been awarded.

Boynton Beach City Manager Resigns

Boynton Beach City Manager Kurt Bressner announced today that he has submitted a letter of resignation to the Mayor and City Commission, effective June 15.

Bressner, who was appointed Boynton Beach’s City Manager in April 2000, said he believes that his goals at the City have been largely accomplished, including modernization of public safety services; improvement of City infrastructure; guidance of commercial and residential development; construction of new recreation facilities throughout the City; and fostering of a competent, compassionate and creative City staff.

“Although I will no longer be city manager,” Bressner said, “I look forward to doing what I can to continue to build a strong and vibrant community.”

Bressner said the decision to leave the City was not an easy one. “There are other personal goals that I want to accomplish,” he said, “and the timing seems just right for me and my family.”

Bressner said he is committed to continuing to work hard during the coming weeks to address financial challenges and to prepare for as seamless a transition as possible. He said, “The City’s budget has not been without challenges.” But, he believes, that after the 2011-2012 fiscal year, prosperity will return to the City.

Before his appointment as Boynton Beach’s city manager, Bressner served as village manager of Bensenville,Ill.; village manager of the Village of Downers Grove, Ill.; city manager of Wood Dale,Ill.; and assistant to the village manager of Naperville,Ill., which is where he started his career in 1974.

“It has been a privilege to serve the City of Boynton Beach,” Bressner said.

Make Boynton “Best of the Road” in Mapping Contest

Rand McNally has teamed up with USA Today to find the best small towns in America, and the City of Boynton Beach is asking you to help put Boynton Beach on the map by voting for it in this “Best of the Road” contest. The top towns will be featured in a “Best of the Road” cross-country rally this summer and in the 2013 Rand McNally Atlas.

From June 6-11, 2011, City of Boynton Beach residents may place at the curb up to eight car and/or passenger tires (with or without rims) for pick up on their regularly scheduled bulk trash day. Tires must be placed at the edge of the road at least three feet away from your garbage cart and any other fixtures, such as telephone poles, mailboxes, etc. Tire and vegetation should be separated.

Join Boynton Beach Mayor Jose Rodriguez as he rolls up his sleeves on Saturday, May 21, for the Mayor’s City Hall Spruce Up. The Mayor is seeking up to 50 volunteers by May 18 to help him paint the exterior of Boynton Beach’s City Hall. Paint rollers and trays, brushes, buckets and tarps are also needed.

The Mayor’s City Hall Spruce Up is a great way to come together with co-workers, family and friends while participating in a “feel-good” activity. It’s also a good opportunity for youth to learn the value and importance of volunteering, and what a difference it can make.

The event will start at 7:00 a.m. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least one two-hour shift and are advised to wear hats, sunscreen and arrive properly attired.

Those under 18 years of age must have their parent or legal guardian sign a Consent Form. Credit toward Community Service Hours is available with this activity.

Dist. I Commissioner Sworn-in as Vice Mayor

Dist. I Comm. William “Bill” Orlove was sworn-in as Boynton Beach Vice Mayor after being elected by his fellow commissioners at the April 27 City Commission meeting. Comm. Orlove replaces Dist. IV Comm. Marlene Ross as Vice Mayor. He also assumes the position of Vice Chair of the Community Redevelopment Agency.

Vice Mayor Orlove was elected to the Commission without opposition in February 2010. Prior to his election, he served on the City’s Recreation and Parks Advisory Board for nine years, the last four as vice chair.

Originally from Chicago, Vice Mayor Orlove has lived in Palm Beach County for more than 20 years and has resided in Boynton Beach for more than 12 years. He started his career as an award-winning reporter for the Boca Raton News, primarily covering the state, appellate and federal court system. After working as a legislative aide for a state representative for three years, he worked as a marketing, and public and media relations manager for local non-profit organizations. He is currently the Director of Communications for the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County, one of the area’s largest philanthropic organizations. He also operates Bill Writes, a writing, publications and public relations consulting service.

Vice Mayor Orlove is a member of the Palm Beach County chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and the Gold Coast Public Relations Council. For three years, he served as a trustee of Temple Shaarei Shalom in Boynton Beach.

Vice Mayor Orlove earned his bachelor’s degree in honors communication from the University of Michigan and his master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University. He enjoys film, music, theater, exercising, traveling, the beach and spending time with his family – his wife, Laura, and daughter, Marissa.
